How Our In-House Waterjet Cutting Services Benefit You

At GMF, we do everything we can to support the US manufacturing industry. So when a customer asks if we can manufacture a specific part, our goal is always to answer, “Yes, and when do you need it?”

Although no sheet metal shop can take on every customer request, our in-house waterjet cutting services empower us to say “yes” to parts we would have otherwise had to no-quote or outsource to other shops for specific operations.

It’s somewhat rare for a sheet metal shop to have in-house waterjet cutting capabilities. But we make it a priority to invest in technologies that help us better address our customers’ needs quickly and cost-effectively.

Key Advantages of Waterjet Cutting Services

waterjet cutting services

Here are a couple ways waterjet cutting services supplement our sheet metal fabrication services, helping us save our customers time and money.

Thick materials

Using a highly pressurized stream of water to cut materials, our OMAX 60120 Precision JetMachining Center can cut metals like mild steel in thicknesses up to 9.5”.

Before we acquired our waterjet, we had to outsource custom industrial jobs that required cutting materials thicker than 0.5”. Now, we can handle these jobs right here in our shop.

Machined finish

Waterjet cutters create precise cuts and clean edges, much like a thin file or saw. Because the process generates no heat, there is no risk of heat deformation or discoloration during cutting.

Alternative methods like laser cutting are often followed by secondary finishing processes to correct damage from heat or other byproducts, such as oxide deposits. With waterjet cutting, we can achieve close to a machined finish, reducing the operations required to complete customers’ parts.

How We Maximize Our Waterjet Cutting Services

Shops that offer waterjet cutting services must know how to maintain their machines so those machines operate to their fullest potential.

To provide our customers with the best waterjet cutting services possible, we employ a multi-step water preparation process before allowing the water to enter the machine.

  1. We strip the water of minerals that could cause buildup.

  2. We channel the water into a pump attached to the end of the machine that concentrates it at 60,000 PSI.

  3. We mix the water with a top-of-the-line garnet abrasive that ensures clean, highly precise cuts.
